GC45 WF26: GCE01 – Review of the Roles of the Moderator and General Secretary for Summer 2025 was carried at the last General Council meeting in August. A task group reviewed the roles of the Moderator and the General Secretary and produced a report with several recommendations.
At its November 2025 meeting, the Executive had to take action to protect the church from liability arising from a construction project. This seriously depleted the Congregational Loan Development Fund and resulted in pausing applications to the fund as there are no resources available to distribute at the moment.
The use of data, to observe trends, map context, plan interventions, and assess impact is becoming more consistent particularly in the Growth initiative but also more broadly across the organization. We continue to work to develop effective use of data, and increased capacity to sharpen focus and strategy.
On January 30, the Trump administration issued an executive order that enacts on the people of Cuba "a new tariff system that allows the United States to impose additional tariffs on imports from any country that directly or indirectly provides oil to Cuba."
The proposal WF25: COM04 Elected or Not was not carried at the last General Council meeting in August. However, the General Council referred it to the General Secretary to clarify the language regarding electing and appointing, with a view to proposing revisions to section D.4.6.2(d).
Administration of the Compassionate Assistance Fund would be easier if the assets were transferred from The United Church Foundation back to The United Church of Canada.
Currently, ministry personnel who have not yet declared themselves to be available for call or appointment, cannot see the full profile descriptions of communities of faith with ministry vacancies.
We believe God/Jesus/Holy Spirit is calling us into continued concrete relationships with partners. One manifestation of this commitment is The United Church of Canada Partner Council. The term of the current Partner Council 2025-2028 ends with the rise of the 46th General Council. The appointment of this new member is to replace a previously-approved member on the current Partner Council, bringing in a Global Ecumenical and social justice perspective.
The meetings of the General Council follow a pattern: central Canada (GC 41 Ottawa); eastern Canada (GC 42 Corner Brook), central Canada (GC 43 Oshawa), western Canada (GC 45 Calgary). In 2023, Horseshoe Falls Regional Council offered to host the next central Canada General Council. The General Council Executive accepted this invitation and confirmed Deborah Laforet as Chair of the Planning Committee.
