GC 28 Inclusive Language 1980

The Sessional Committee on the Concerns of Women and Men in the Church affirms the intent of Petitions/Memorials #80, #82, #83, #84, #85.

Therefore, we respectfully recommend the following motion:

WHEREAS children, youth, women and men are all called to be members of the Body of Christ and the household and family of God.

WHEREAS changes of language offers creative and expanding possibilities for Christians in their perceptions of God and of one another.

WHEREAS changes of language alone will not affect changes in attitude and actions, it is unlikely that attitudes and actions will be altered significantly without an accompanying change of word patters.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT

This 28th General Council commits itself to the discipline of opening our language in the following ways:

  1. That material presently in use be studied with a view to identifying exclusive language. Those materials to be studied would include the Hymn Book, The Manual, Service Book, “New Creed”, Christian Education Resources and other Divisional Materials.

  2. That changes be recommended that would avoid such language.

  3. That these changes be implemented in new editions and publications.
