GC30 Nicaragua (1984N311)

WHEREAS Nicaragua, like other countries, should have the freedom of self-determination; and

WHEREAS it is clear that the United States has been and is seeking to bring about the downfall of the government of Nicaragua by providing funding, military equipment and training for the contra forces; and

WHEREAS it is possible that American intervention may become even greater following the United States presidential election:

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

THAT the 30th General Council of The United Church of Canada:

  1. REQUEST the government of Canada to recognize the right of self-determination;

  2. BRING influence to bear on the government of the United States of America to withdraw from interventions in Nicaraguan affairs.
