GC33 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1990U515)

We welcome the fact that 22 countries have ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Children and that it is now in effect.

We urge the Canadian government to ratify the Convention on the Rights of Children as soon as possible.

We urge that The United Church of Canada enter into dialogue with Canadian-based multinational corporations in countries where child labour is common to ensure that the company’s code of conduct prohibits the exploitative employment of children.

We strongly urge financial institutions to relieve underdeveloped countries of their foreign debt load, thus allowing their peoples to return to economic systems based on supplying their own needs.

We point out to those with political power that, to use the word of Gro Harlem Bruntland, the Prime Minister of Norway, “We need a new vision and a stronger political will and determination. We need a new global system of values…”
