GC35 Health Reform (1994H262)

Rationale and Faith Base:

WHEREAS health reform is taking place in many provinces in Canada; and

WHEREAS this process is having major impacts on the church’s service to senior citizens and especially on nursing homes and homes for the aged;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Maritime Conference petition the General Council to:

  1. Take steps to convene a meeting of representatives of United Church related institutions serving senior citizens to:
    1. clarify the United Church’s commitment to the provision of health care
    2. share information on the impacts of health reform.
  2. Call upon provincial jurisdictions to recognize and respect the role of the church in the provision of health-related services to seniors.
  3. Undertake to have the Manual of The United Church of Canada updated to reflect the current realities of funding for church-related bodies involved in health care and housing for seniors. [for example, Appendix IV, 4 (e) (f)]
