GCE Japanese Canadian Citizens (1985J111) WHEREAS the 29th General Council, August 1982, agreed to:Acknowledge its lack of persistence of behalf of Japanese Canadians injured through internment;Urge the government of Canada to make speedy restitution and honourable compensation to Japanese Canadians so injured, that justice may be done and be seen to be done, and that this wound in our Canadian life may be healed; andWHEREAS the 30th General Council, August 1984, agreed to request the government of Canada to:Formally and publicly acknowledge the injustice done to Japanese Canadians through injury of confiscation and internment;Enter into negotiation with the National Association of Japanese Canadians to determine suitable financial compensation as was recommended by the Special Parliamentary Task Force on Visible Minorities in their report commonly known as “Equity Now”;Develop an appeal procedure for Canadian citizens to protect against future injustices through invoking the War Measures Act; andWHEREAS letters from the Moderator and others have been sent to the Minister of Multiculturalism requesting a full and just settlement; andWHEREAS there have been meetings between Dr. Art Miki, Convenor of the National Association of Japanese Canadians, and a member of The United Church of Canada staff; andWHEREAS the Division of Mission in Canada’s publication Action Agendas, is asking its subscribers to write, both individually and corporately, to the Minister of Multiculturalism in support of the United Church action:THEREFORE IT BE RESOLVEDTHAT the Division of Mission in Canada and the Division of Communication, along with the Observer, communicate this information to:The Japanese Canadian population in Canada;The members of The United Church of Canada.
