GC30 Central America (1984C215.01)

WHEREAS the right to self-determination of the Central American people is threatened by US policy in the region; and

WHEREAS the increasing militarization of the region threatens to plunge Central America into a regional war:

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

THAT the 30th General Council of The United Church of Canada, through its Secretariat, urge the Canadian government to:

  1. STRONGLY and publicly condemn all military intervention in Central America especially the evident military intervention of the United States of America; and call for the withdrawal of all foreign troops;

  2. COMMEND the Canadian government for opening an $18 million dollar line of credit to the government of Nicaragua and urge the extension of new lines of credit to the government of Nicaragua;

  3. OPEN an Embassy in Nicaragua so that there may be better lines of communication between the two countries.

Resolution of the NEW05 Indigenous Sovereignty Proposal

On Nov. 8, members of the Executive of the General Council had a special meeting to discuss recommendations about NEW05 Indigenous Sovereignty Proposal. They affirmed the recall of the National Indigenous Spiritual Gathering (NISG) to determine the future of the Indigenous Church.
