GC32 AIDS-Related Education and Services (1988A362)

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the 32nd General Council of The United Church of Canada:

  1. Encourage the Division of Mission in Canada to continue its education within the church as to the nature. Transmission and prevention of AIDS and the need for information about blood testing;
  2. Instruct the Division of Mission in Canada to establish guidelines for the church in:
    1. working with community groups to provide additional health care and palliative care services such as hospices for those suffering from AIDS,
    2. dealing with issues of confidentiality and hospitality when AIDS support and information groups request use of church facilities;
  3. Instruct the Division of ministry, Personnel, and Education to encourage all church education institutions to facilitate:
    1. Pastoral care workshops for those who minister to persons affected by AIDS
    2. Continuing education opportunities for chaplains, ministers and volunteers working with persons affected by AIDS
  4. Declare The United Church of Canada’s full support for equal protection under the law from discrimination in employment, accommodation and services to all persons with AIDS and those who test HIV positive and challenge the evil inherent in discrimination and condemnation directed against them…;
  5. Encourage courts and divisions of the United Church to work in consultation with community-based groups, providing services to those with AIDS and those who test HIV-positive, encouraging a mutual ministry among those with AIDS, those affected by AIDS, those providing services and education, and the church.
