GCE Termination of the Nestle Boycott (1984T252)

The termination of the boycott was reported, and the action of the Division in October 1984 communicated.  The Executive of General Council agreed to:

  1. ENDORSE the International Nestle Boycott Committee (INBC) to terminate the current boycott of Nestle;

  2. CELEBRATE the success of this seven-year campaign to change a major multinational company’s aggressive practices in marketing infant formula in the Third World, which contributed to severe malnutrition for many infants;

  3. COMMUNICATE to Nestle our appreciation for their agreement to abide by the International Code and their seriousness in implementing that commitment since January 1984, thereby becoming the industry leader in compliance with the International Code;

  4. EXPRESS appreciation to the many United Church people and others across the country who so faithfully supported the Nestle boycott over the years;

  5. EXPRESS support to the INBC in its continuing relationship with Nestle relative to ongoing monitoring and compliance, and resolving the remaining issues, including the application by Nestle of the International Code in their large market in Western Europe;

FOCUS attention on other infant formula companies who have yet to agree to the level of compliance with the International Code that Nestle has, including the American companies Bristol-Myers (Mead Johnson), American Home Products (Wyeth), Abbott-Ross and the West German company, Milupa.

The Executive took this action, with gratitude for the success of the campaign.
