I am grateful for the privilege of serving as Acting General Secretary during General Secretary Michael Blair’s sabbatical. It has given me the opportunity to immerse myself more fully in the work of the denomination. It has also allowed me to represent the church on a few occasions— at an online event hosted by the President of the Canadian Council of Churches, at our open house with the Presbyterian Church in Canada, and, most recently, at the funeral of former Moderator, the Very Rev. Dr. Bruce McLeod.
The United Church of Canada continues to reaffirm its commitments to equity and anti-oppression. The church’s commitments to equity help us glimpse the Kin-dom of God, where all are welcome at the table (Luke 14:12–14) and are honoured and created in God’s image.
The use of data, to observe trends, map context, plan interventions, and assess impact is becoming more consistent particularly in the Growth initiative but also more broadly across the organization. We continue to work to develop effective use of data, and increased capacity to sharpen focus and strategy.
Greetings from the board and staff of The United Church of Canada Foundation. We are pleased to be on a new stage in our journey together. The signing of the new relationship and governance agreement in the fall of 2025 marked a special inflection point in our relationship. While staff of both organizations have always worked well together and we have all done our best to ensure we minimized any overlap in work, the clarity this new arrangement brings will benefit us both.
“We sing of a church of inspired, resilient and diverse contextual communities of disciples seeking to continue the story of Jesus by embodying Christ’s presence in the world. A church that is present and deeply connected coast to coast - to coast- to coast in rural and urban settings, and in ecumenical and global relationships. A church guided by hope-filled, adaptive and effective ministry leaders, in a denomination that is increasingly multigenerational, multiracial and intercultural.”
New jobs always mean growth, learning and transition. I’m grateful to those who have helped me to settle in and understand more fully the role of the Moderator and the work of The United Church of Canada. The early days were spent meeting with staff and teams of the UCC in person and online. I quickly realized that where I needed significant orientation was with the systems we use for our communication and work.
As the legal administrator of the Pension Plan of The United Church of Canada (Plan), the Executive of the General Council (the Executive) is responsible for ensuring that the Plan and its pension fund (Fund) are operated prudently and in accordance with their terms and applicable law.
The strategic objectives―Justice, Leadership, Common Good, Climate, and Indigenous Pathways―show strong intersections among them, and collectively contribute to the overarching strategic priority on Growth. The report identifies each objective and offers a narrative and numerical summary of overall progress, as well as giving more detailed information as to how each activity in this objective has fared in this quarter. Please note that the numbers reflect progress not to the ultimate three-year goal, but to the planned key results for this quarter.
On behalf of General Council, the Audit Committee has carried out its assigned duties from 2019 through 2025.
