CG45 WF12: COM01 Just and Lasting Peace in the Philippines for Summer 2025

Half of discussion groups addressed this proposal.

Of those groups who did discuss this proposal, there was a general agreement with this proposal, though some people felt more information and education was needed to make an informed decision.

Regarding recommendation 3(b) of the proposal, there were concerns, given the current financial situation of the United Church and our partner relationships, in making specific financial commitments to particular global partners.

Therefore, the Way Forward Team proposes:

That, in response to COM01 Just and Lasting Peace in the Philippines, the 45th General Council, 2025:

  • affirm COM01 recommendations 1, 2, and 3(a), and

  • affirm the commitment to global partnership, and continue to support The United Church of Canada’s partners in the Philippines in their deep capacity for and implementation of programs that work toward addressing the root cause of the conflict and seeking a just and lasting peace in the Philippines

  • direct the General Secretary to apply the Principles for Justice Work in taking actions outlined in this proposal, and

  • direct the General Secretary to coordinate actions and draw on the lessons learned from the World Council of Churches and other ecumenical organizations through their participation in peace processes around the world, for example, in Colombia.
