WHEREAS the United Church has been on record since the 16th general Council of 1954 as favouring a National Health Insurance Plan;
WHEREAS the government of Canada has passed legislation, enabling provincial governments to participate in a National Medical Program with the federal government sharing the cost, providing their plans are universal, comprehensive, portable and responsible to public authority:
BE IT RESOLVED THAT this General Council
COMMEND the enabling action of the federal government and the action of provinces making provision for medicare plans in accordance with this legislation;
REQUEST all other provinces to seek to bring similar plans into being as soon as is practical.
