GC31 South Moresby-Haida Indians (1986S555)

WHEREAS the United Church of Canada is committed to the stewardship of creation as expressed in Genesis 1:29-31; and

WHEREAS The United Church of Canada and the government of Canada recognize the right of native peoples to self-determination as expressed in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights; and

WHEREAS the Haida nation seeks to preserve its cultural and national heritage in South Moresby; and

WHEREAS the impact of commercial logging threatens the preservation of the ecology of this unique area:

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the 31st General Council request the General Secretary of General Council to request the federal, and where appropriate, the provincial governments to clarify, strengthen and guarantee Indian fishing rights in full consultation with the Indian people; this to include licensing principles and licensing boards.
